Womxn in Cannabis: JMom & Quontay!
This Womxn’s Month we celebrate all the pioneers + hot mamas making it possible for cannabis to be accessible for all. With legalization well underway in Massachusetts, we are watching closely how those most impacted by the War on Drugs - specifically Black + Brown people- are finding ways to engage with cannabis and claim back their communities’ right to wealth. These womxn have been on the forefront of cannabis equity and we want to celebrate their accomplishments as they push for equity on all sides.
Definition: Womxn -
The term Womxn is an alternative term for the English language word “women” which has been used to explicitly include non-cisgender women. It has been used in a similar manner as womyn and wimmin, as a rejection of the English-only etymology of 'woman'.
Black and Brown entrepreneurs in the city of Boston are bursting with ideas on how to capitalize off the new cannabis market. The pop-up dinner scene is one of the newest avenues that cannabis users are taking to explore a new high through food. Black (and womxn) chefs such as Jennifer Mompoint of the Jmom Experience were smart to see the vision and quickly adapted to exploring cooking with cannabis. At the same time, entrepreneurs like Quontay Turner of Q Made It have learned the value of partnerships to maximize their own personal enjoyment of cannabis and form community.
Through their curated private dinner parties, JMom & Quontay are telling the story of how Black womxn are being welcomed into the world of cannabis. As they are starting off, the womxn have leveraged their own social circle to create their micro business, The After 420 Affair.
The After 420 Affair hosts a variety of different functions including delicious brunches! Their brunch menu included: a mimosa bar with customized glasses for each guest, a cannabis-infused crab cake sandwich, and an affogato for dessert! Meanwhile, cannabis was enjoyed throughout the event in an open and safe space. We all had a fabulous and high time together! The best part? All led and attended by Black & Brown womxn!
Black womxn deserve to be in the cannabis industry. These womxn are marking their own path forward. In their own words, here are insights on their story.

How did your family influence your decision to become a chef?
My mom always used to tell me this Haitian Creole saying: when you die, there are only two things you leave with: what you see (memories) and what is in your stomach" so create beautiful memories and eat delicious food! After a close family member passed away suddenly at the end of 2016, I realized life was too short not to do something I love.

How has it been to work together on The After 420 Affair Brunch?
When we came together and started to share our introductions to cannabis we discovered that while we might have been at different stages, by different means, we all found cannabis to be therapeutic and relaxing. Cannabis was a way for all of us to cope and heal from the hardships and stress of life. It was an obvious no-brainer that we would work together. Once we started going, it felt like a spark between all of us. I’m just grateful to be doing this with my friends while merging cannabis and community.
The After 420 Affair Brunch will be resuming on 4/18/2020.
